Mount Isa Race Day 26th May

Mount Isa trainer Jay Morris may be engaged to jockey Tamara Tincknell but Central West Premiership winning jockey Jason Babarovich stole his heart at Buchanan Park when they combined for a treble.

There is no panic in Babarovich and he showed on Saturday when he sits on a horse he is as cool as Clint Eastwood in a Dirty Harry movie.

From the inside gate in the Ratings Band 0-50 Handicap (1,450m) Target Strike was quickly away but rival Split the Atom missed it and tailed the field. Entering the back straight Alluder and Wicked Investment moved past Target Strike as Babarovich put him to sleep like Rip Van Winkle.

As the field went along the George Street side Babarovich woke Target Strike and he quickly gathered in Alluder to take the lead. Alluder came again to challenge Target Strike who kicked it up just enough to keep him at bay.

The two and a quarter length win means Target Strike has not finished out of a place in his eight starts. Alluder was a game second and Split the Atom, who used up all his gas to get back into the contest, faded to finish five and three quarter lengths third.

The pair started the day with successive wins through Eschelon Rose and Expat Envy.

Satan Da swept around the field to take the lead at the 800 metre mark of the Class B Handicap (1,200m). With a hundred to go Satan Da hit quicksand and Babarovich lifted stablemate Eschelon Rose to nab him on the line by a short neck with the consistent The Kings Magic three lengths third.

From the outside barrier in the following Benchmark 65 Handicap (1,200m) Baborovich had Expat Envy out of the gates like a bullet, allowing him to easily cross to the rails. It was a three way go down the back straight between Expat Envy, Mandalong Pass and Code One.

As the trio left the back straight Babarovich let the other pair knock each other out and watched the show. Two lengths behind at the 400 Expat Envy powered to the front and in the end it was a hands and heels one and three quarter length win from Code One.

Admiral Ruff hugged the rails around the corner to finish three lengths third just in front of I’m Desperate Too out wide.

Babarovich did not have a ride in the Maiden Plate but would have needed Winx to topple the impressive Valpons. The Sunshine Coast galloper showed an impressive turn of speed at the top of the straight that put him two lengths clear.

Nitro City and Lager kept coming but the short burst had given Valpons enough of a break. In the end it was a comfortable half length win over Nitro City with Lager a length third.

The QTIS Benchmark 55 Handicap (1,000m) was a one horse race with Tanya Parry’s Wicked Wiki the one horse. It was the charge of the Light Brigade but while the others fell by the wayside Wicked Wiki was full of running winning by five and three quarter lengths in a scorching 58 seconds neat.

Favourite Crack A Coldie was second a length and three quarters to the good of former Central Queensland galloper Code One.

The five year old gelding arrived in North West Queensland last September and is unbeaten in four starts at Buchanan Park over 1,000 metres.

The final race was the Open Plate (1,450m) and with just the four runners they found positions and settled in until the business end. Revel In The Chaos and old stager Diurnal Tiger were in front and Wulfwin and Anymore never more than two lengths from them.

Revel In The Chaos got clear down the George Street Side and as Diurnal Tiger dropped off Wulfwin and Anymore began their runs. However they made no impression and Revel In The Chaos won easily by four and a quarter lengths and three lengths between Wulfwin in second and third-placed anymore.
